Bhubaneswar is the capital city of Orissa. This city has a rich cultural history spanning over 2000 years. It is the largest city of Orissa and the throbbing heart of economic and commercial activities of the state. Since 16th August, 2011, the city has been known as the sister city of Cupertino, California, USA. The current population strength of the city is close to 904,721.
Since the early medieval period, Bhubaneswar has earned name and fame due to its architectural wonders, religious influence and captivating cultural heritage. The city houses a large gathering of Hindu temples and so, was called as “Temple City” of India. The city along with Puri and Konark form the famous “Golden Triangle” that makes the most inviting destination for the enthusiastic travelers.
The must-visit and most popular temples are Lingaraj Temple, Parasuramesvara Temple, Rajarani Temple, Vaital Temple, Sari Temple etc. These temples were built up during the ancient period. A few temples have been built in the recent past and among them, Ram Mandirm ISKON, Maa Kanakdurga Pitha claim relevance and significance.
The State Museum of Bhubaneswar offers an extensive collection of archeological weapons, artifacts, arts and crafts. The tribal handmade items – showcased at the Tribal Research Institute Museum – present a slice of much adored and touted craftsmanship of different tribes of Orissa. The Orissa government has taken several laudable steps to preserve the antique pieces as well as tribal art. The government has taken earnest initiatives to find a market for the showpieces and necessary items made by the tribes as a measure of improving the life styles of these people.
Bhubaneswar is also famous for Odissi dance, sand sculptures and music. The city houses Odissi Dance Academy that was established by Kelucharan Mahapatra, the legendary Odissi dancer. The tourists hate to give Udaygiri, Khandagiri, Dhowlgiri a miss which are not far away from Bhubaneswar.
